WESTERN HERBAL TREATMENT OF HEAVY PERIODS!

WOMEN'S HEALTH: WESTERN HERBAL TREATMENT OF HEAVY PERIODS!
* Seaweed
Trace minerals, such as iodine, can be important in helping to curb excessive blood flow during a period. They improve the health of the thyroid gland, which plays a major role in regulating menstrual flow. These trace minerals are found in abundance in seaweed of all types. Try milder-tasting seaweed, such as hizike or dulse. Kelp, while beneficial, can have a very strong flavor that does not appeal to everyone. You can include seaweed in your cooking by adding it to soups, salads and casserole dishes.

* Traditional Remedies
Cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia) is a traditional remedy for various menstrual problems, including heavy periods. You can include cinnamon in cooking, or you can add it to beverages. The herb black horehound (Ballota nigra) is another traditional remedy for heavy periods, but its effectiveness has not been studied scientifically. There is some research on the anti-haemorrhagic effect of avens (Geum urbanum). Many Western herbalists use the aerial part of the plant, but the research, such as it is, is on the root (known as burnet). Burnet is also widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to treat heavy periods.
Astringent herbs, including cranesbill (Geranium maculatum), witch hazel (Hamamelis virginia) and periwinkle (Vinca minor) are also traditionally given for heavy periods. They contain tannin, which decreases menstrual discharge. Rasperry (Rubus idaeus), alfalfa (Medicago sativa) and nettle (Urtica dioica) leaves and yarrow (Achillea millefolium) have the same effect. You can make a tea with these herbs using two parts raspberry leaf, two parts nettle leaf, one part alfalfa leaf, and one-half part yarrow leaf. Put four to six tablespoons of the mixed herbs in a jug and cover with a liter of boiling water. Cover the jug and let the herbs infuse for 20 minutes. Drink two or three cups of this tea every day. You can keep the leftover tea and drink it later on, either at room temperature or heated up.
